If you missed out on the Vella version of Ashe & Dez, you’ll want to grab yourself a copy of this compilation of part one.
This is easily my favorite sapphic story in the adventure genre. There’s so much more to it than just the adventure, though—it’s got western elements, desert perils, and the kind of episodic drama that makes bingeable TV shows impossible to stop watching. I especially love the nuance of the corrupt church, one of the driving forces underlying all of the tension even amidst the action. The world-building is impeccable and really makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of it all.
You’re going to fall in love with Ashe & Dez and the emotional connection they forge amidst all the chaos. Ashe is a physical guide leading Dez and the corrupt church members to Dez’s destination as His Bride, but she also serves as a kind of spiritual guide as time goes on and Dez gets to discover what exists outside of the church with her assistance. Dez also stands really strongly on her own and I love her internal struggle—it feels so personal considering my own experiences with religion. You’re going to love the smut, too, and it’s very creative at times considering the resources that our ladies have.
Part one sits at around two hundred pages, and you could easily finish it in a day with how hard it is to put down. If gunslinging lesbians didn’t sell you on it, I don’t know what else will. Set your Kindle to the Sepia-colored theme for some immersive Western vibes and get reading!!
